Tens of thousands of Australians are expected to flock to over 40 major walks today in support of a Yes vote in what will be the campaign’s largest show of force so far.
Walks for Yes yesterday in Adelaide attracted around 10 000 South Australians, whilst around 700 Queenslanders attended a walk in Townsville.
Events on Sunday will be headlined by music icons including Bernard Fanning, Dan Sultan, John Butler, Missy Higgins, Peter Garrett and Spiderbait who will play in front of supporters post the walks in key capital cities:
- Australia Capital Territory – Canberra
- New South Wales –Bathurst, Blue Mountains, Braidwood, Central Coast, Eden, Goulburn, Narooma, Newcastle, Orange, Port Macquarie, Queanbeyan, Southern Highlands, Sydney, Tuncurry, Wollongong
- Northern Territory – Alice Springs and Darwin
- Queensland - Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Rockhampton, Tweed Heads, Yungaburra
- South Australia – Kangaroo Island & Victor Harbor
- Tasmania – Break O’Day, Burnie, Hobart and Launceston
- Western Australia –, Albany, Geraldton, Margaret River and Perth
- Victoria –Barwon Heads, Melbourne, Safety Beach and Warrnamboo
Yes23 Campaign Director Dean Parkin said community support for a successful Yes vote was continuing to build across the country.
“Australians from all parts of our country will be out in force today in the strongest signal of support for the Yes campaign to date,” Mr Parkin said.
“We expect tens of thousands of Australians will come together at over 40 walks in all states and territories to back a successful referendum on 14 October.
“We are a people-powered campaign with almost 40 000 volunteers spreading our positive message that this referendum is simply about recognition of Indigenous Australians, listening and better outcomes in areas such as health and education.
"There is no better time for Australians to be part of this unifying moment. I encourage Australians to come along with friends and family today and find out more about the positive difference a Yes vote will make to improving the lives of Indigenous people."
